VERBATIM
Creating theatre from everyday life

About

Verbatim is a form of documentary theatre in which recorded stories of ordinary people, often dealing with socially relevant issues, serve as the basis for the drama. The stories are not polished or edited, but reproduced as they are, in order to convey the image and character of the real person as faithfully as possible.

The “Verbatim” workshop is based on the techniques of Michael Chekhov, as well as exercises drawn from the practices of improvisational and documentary theatre makers.

We’ll talk a lot, open up, talk nonsense, tell stories, exaggerate, embellish, look for what matters in our own words, and give it all a form.

Who is it for?

For actors — to develop freedom and fluency in speech, as well as observational skills.

And for anyone who wants to try creating a verbatim performance within a limited timeframe.

What to expect?

During the workshop, you’ll explore techniques used in documentary theatre, identify a topic that matters to you, work with existing material, and interview one another to create a mini-performance based on your stories.

Programme
Day 1
Relaxation and self-exploration exercises. We work on the flow of speech and learn to function as an ensemble. We try creating short textual sketches without a dramatic structure
Day 2
We work on the ability to be actively engaged on stage, coordinating speech and action. We experiment with building stage compositions from simple techniques, while searching for the form of our performance and its sound design
Performance
We perform the piece for a small, comfortable audience, exploring a topic of your choice through your own stories, with minimal theatricalization
Want to give it a try?

I can adapt any workshop to suit you and your needs. A workshop can have artistic goals or become part of a strategy session, corporate event, or training seminar.
